Maine Township Office of Emergency Management Seeks Volunteers

April 17, 2013 — Maine Township's Office of Emergency Management/Citizens' Corps is seeking volunteers for the Fire Corps/Medical Resource Corps Firefighter Rehab program. Part of the Department of Homeland Security's Citizen Corps program which was established in the wake of the 9/11 disaster, this new program is designed to increase the capacity of first responder agencies through the use of community volunteers.

Community members may volunteer to learn how to provide support for fire fighters and other first responders in long duration emergency situations. In return, community volunteers will gain a greater understanding of fire and emergency services and become better prepared to handle their own emergencies as well as those of their neighbors. Volunteers may also act as advocates for the fire and emergency services in the community.

Teams will be developed from the applicants for this program and assigned to rotating shifts after an initial training program which is expected to last about six months. Training will be provided for all phases of rehab from nourishment to medical screening as well as the basic components of emergency response. Leadership positions are available for those wishing more responsibility.
