Long-time MaineStreamers Director Mary Swanson to Retire

November 1, 2017 — Mary Swanson, Director of MaineStreamers since 2000 will bid farewell to Maine Township when she retires Nov. 17. During her career, she has earned numerous awards and honors for the Maine Township social program for seniors which has grown by more than 25 percent currently providing a wide variety of social, recreational, and educational activities for approximately 3,000 members.

During her tenure, Swanson has been recognized as a leader in her field winning Senior Director of the Year for Townships in both 2005 and 2014, the State of Illinois Mind Body, Spirit Award, and the Illinois Department of Aging Marketing Award. Her department will also bring home four more awards later this month from the annual conference of Township Officials of Illinois (TOI). President of the Illinois Township Committee of Senior Directors for four years, she has also served as President of the Association of Illinois Senior Centers and has been a presenter for the National Council on Aging where she is also a member.

During the 17 years she has overseen the program, MaineStreamers has added more day trips and classes and intergenerational activities such as a fishing trip that brings children who have never had a chance to go fishing to spend a day with seniors enjoying this sport together. Also of special note are Swing into Spring, the annual Senior Expo which links link seniors who need services with vendors who provide them, the 90-plus birthday party which began in 2001 with 30 seniors 90 and older in attendance growing to 155 celebrants with five 100 plus years old, and a variety of musicals.

"I could not think of a more fitting retirement honor than the awards won by the MaineStreamers department over the years recognizing that Mary Swanson has contributed to the success of Maine Township," said Supervisor Morask.
